The ever-chaotic Harley Quinn steps through a portal into an entirely new adventure: Suicide Squad Isekai. Tagging along for the ride are King Shark, Peacemaker, Deadshot, and Clayface, amongst other familiar members of the squad, into a land filled with magic and creatures, far away from the grimy streets of Gotham. Under the steely watch of Amanda Waller, with bombs strapped to them, the squad finds itself on a ticking clock to quell a war in a foreign, mysterious kingdom.
The latest teaser trailer shows us what to expect. It begins with Harley, played by the talented Anna Nagase, who's, in turn, very excited to grasp this opportunity to turn "hero" in this new, crazy world. Swinging her iconic bat, she's all about taking out enemy soldiers to show the world her skills, while enjoying some combating with enemies other than the usual—Batman. The trailer also teases some of the fantastical creatures and breathtaking environments Task Force X will find themselves in, which gives a bit of a twist to their normal missions.
But it isn't all fighting and warfare. The trailer goes very deep into Harley's tormented mind, reflecting on her former life as the psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel and her relationship with the Joker, played here by Yūichirō Umehara. Their poisoned love affair gets a shout-out as well, with snippets of their chaotic escapades in Gotham. The ensemble voice cast are some of anime's most seasoned veterans. In addition to Nagase, who is equally known for her role in Jujutsu Kaisen and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Yūichirō Umehara portrays the sinister Joker. The squad also includes Reigo Yamaguchi as Deadshot, Takehito Koyasu as Peacemaker, Jun Fukuyama as Clayface, and Subaru Kimura as King Shark.
Suicide Squad Isekai is a production promising to blend the gritty essence of these iconic characters with the colorful, rich flair of anime. The creative team behind this film is helmed by a fresh director, Eri Osada, and a screenplay written by Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara. It has character design drafts by Akira Amano, Naoto Hosoda in charge of the leading character design, and music by Kenichiro Suehiro. WIT Studio, celebrating works such as Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and Spy × Family, will bring renowned animation production to the front.
When can you catch this exciting new series? Suicide Squad Isekai debuts in Japan starting July, and this represents a bold new direction for these fan-favorite scoundrels. It's an animesque fusion of DC Comics that you won't want to miss, and the countdown has begun to when we can accompany Harley and her notorious squad in creating chaos in a magical, dangerous world.
